What did you order? Whoops.

unknown.jpeg

Currently, when Facebook members buy items like movie tickets or shoes (or whatever) on participating e-commerce sites, news of those purchases are sent to the members’ friends. According to Mediapost, “after three weeks of increasingly loud protests, Facebook is reportedly considering retooling its controversial Beacon program, which notifies members about their friends’ purchases.” What, you say? You didn’t know Facebook was sharing your purchases with your friends? Mediapost says, “Members have an opportunity to decline to share that information, but the opt-out system is seriously flawed, with users not seeing the opt-outs and/or not understanding that doing nothing means Facebook will share information about their purchases.” And you were worried that your REAL age showed up in your profile, silly.

No More Minding the Gap For Emma

map-tube-standard.gif

Emma Clarke, the voice of the Tube in London has been fired for saying negative things about the underground transportation system. If you’ve ridden the Tube, you’ve heard her– reminding you to “Mind the gap”. Apparently, she doesn’t use the Tube– saying it would a “dreadful” experience for her to hear herself. And apparently, the LU would rather use a voice talent that actually endorses the product. Go figure.

“…96.2% of all statistics are made up.”

Almost made it to the Idea Conference this year, but my nails weren’t quite dry.

Last year was apparently a great success, with a round of inspiration for all. This one I particularly like, Euro’s David Jones, “taking a swipe at the research and pre-testing industry.” Mr. Jones exhorted listeners to stop asking permission. Drawing on a “truth” from British comedian Vic Reeves that “96.2% of all statistics are made up,” Jones argued that some of the most well-liked ads aren’t based on research or focus-group results. Instead they but rely on a creative director’s gut instinct of what consumers will like. Boy, do we like this guy.

Gettin’ Orwellian With It

1984first.jpg

So, what do you think about being advertised to on your social networks? It’s taboo, to be sure, but how do we all really feel about? We don’t seem to be bothered about having our personal info emblazoned on Facebook, answering each other’s marketing questions on LinkedIn, or going like lemmings to the newest videos from the music industry posted on YouTube. Search Insider’s David Berkowitz posted this interesting blog today, which Tattoo very much enjoyed. My take: when people make information voluntarily public, marketers are fools not to find smart ways to use it. What the heck?
