We hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving with friends and family.
One thing you probably didn’t see over the holiday was a ballsy ad from PETA. The ad was supposed to air on NBC during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade but NBC nixed it due to not being up to “NBC Universal Standards”.
The primary focus of the ad was to highlight the unethical treatment of turkeys leading up to their most “illustrious” occasion.
On November 27th (Black Friday), the biggest shopping day of the year, AdBusters (a not-for-profit, anti-consumerist organization) is calling for millions of people across the globe to put away their cash and credit cards for 24 hours. AdBusters’ purpose for event is to get consumers to bring an end to frivolous spending and transcend the realm of materialism.
Kalle Lasn, Co-founder of Adbusters believes that meaningless spending was one of the factors that caused the finanical meltdown of 2008.
“It’s our culture of excess and meaningless consumption — the glorified spending and borrowing of the past decade that’s at the root of the crisis we now find ourselves in.”
Economic meltdown, together with the ecological crisis of climate change could be the beginning of a major global cultural shift — the dawn of a new age: the age of Post-Materialism.
“A simpler, pared-down lifestyle – one in which we’re not drowning in debt – may well be the answer to this crisis we’re in,” says Lasn. “Living within our means will also make us happier and healthier than we’ve been in years.”
On a side note, its ironic the individuals in the costumes protesting consumerism in the bottom photo probably spent a little bit of money for the makeup, hats and costumes with corporate logos. In a way, they still are contributing to capitalistic monster they sought to fight. Sounds wasteful and hypocritical to me, just saying.

This past Sunday when the Steelers played the Bengals, Joe Green was awarded his Clio award for a Coke commercial he did back in 1979. The commercial itself is one of the most recognizable sports related commercials ever made, and it won a Clio award for creative excellence. Joe was unable to attend the presentation back in ’79, and the 30 year anniversary of the commercial reminded Coke that Joe never got his award. So during pregame against the Bengals this weekend, they presented him his award in an on-field ceremony.
30 years later Mean Joe Green is united with his advertising award.
This past Sunday night featured an NFL first and an NFL last, an on-field advertising ambush. The Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end Brent Celek scored a TD and busted out the famous Captain Morgan Pirate pose in the end-zone. With almost 22 million viewers watching, the NFL has never seen anything like this before.
The celebration was quickly banned by the NFL, but it was pretty cool to see the NFL’s first guerrilla advertising in the end-zone. Celek denies knowing of a Captain Morgan Pose, but he somehow found a little Captain in himself. Full story on Yahoo Sports
