THE Decision

Advertising for a good cause. Who would have thought something as simple as a “DECISION” would bring so much height and craze to sports fans all over the country? LeBron James, the most valuable player of the NBA, will be announcing whether or not he will be staying in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio as a part of the Cleveland Cavaliers or leaving to join another team. The talk of this decision has been outrageous. According to an article in AdAge “Commercial revenue from the special program — which is being called “The Decision” — will be donated to the Boy & Girls Club of America, a charity that ESPN and Disney also support.” To some people this event may seem ridiculous, to others it might be everything, but either way…good is coming out of it, so no complaining now.

ESPN gets the exclusive coverage of this decision, however, will be sacrificing some revenue by allowing James to choose his own interviewer. “ESPN could be giving up a lot from an ad-revenue perspective. Giving away valuable ad dollars in exchange for the chance to broadcast popular sports, news or celebrity events seems unlikely to spread quickly,” according to the AdAge article. LeBron James has complete control over ESPN and their entire business when it comes to this coverage. Pretty powerful wouldn’t you say?
