“The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” ads by Old Spice have created a frenzy with viewers. According to an article in Creativity it pulled off social media play of the year. How did they do it? You probably couldn’t guess if you tried.

According to an article on Read Write Web “a team of creatives, tech geeks, marketers and writers gathered in an undisclosed location in Portland, Oregon yesterday and produced 87 short comedic YouTube videos about Old Spice.” Top the 87 videos made yesterday with 74 more today and 4 million views…already! Basically…they have done nothing but eat, breathe, and sleep Old Spice videos.

So who is the ‘Old Spice Man’ everyone is going crazy over? Actor Isaiah Mustafa. He along with Old Spice’s marketing agency came up with this idea to create these videos in direct response to viewers and/or high-profile people who were sending in comments. The article stated they have done videos in response to Digg founder Kevin Rose and TV star Alyssa Milano along with other people both famous and not.

They are making these ads personal and fun, which has ultimately made their audience huge. So a round of applause to them for their booming idea! Several comments from viewers describe this strategy as “brilliant”. One even said “It’s amazing how one marketing campaign can transform Old Spice from the aftershave your grandfather used to something so hip and masculine.”

Old Spice has also done a good job marketing their product not only towards men, but women. They figured women were the ones actually buying the product, so why not make it more appealing to them? Good idea.
