Certainly, you’ve all seen it by now: Fast Company’s article about Alex Bogusky. (insert eye roll here.) Fast Company makes several comparisons between Alex and Jesus; the article also touts profundities from the agency’s top creatives, like this one: ‘”To try to be cool is to not be cool,” Keller pronounces. “To chase cool, you’re chasing something that already exists, which means you’re always going to be on the wrong side of it, you’ll always be following.” (I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.) Overly-cool, overly-hyped, overly-popular: wake me when it’s over.

We’ve all been there: shoes off, laptop removed from bag, belt buckle removed, Ziploc filled with 3.4 oz containers ready to roll on through. But the people in front of you have never heard about the Ziploc bag rule, the woman is in tears about throwing away her full bottle of Sunsilk, the guy sets off the alarm with his car keys in his jacket pocket for the 6th time, and what? They have to take their shoes off? Why?
In an effort to stop the madness, the TSA is now testing a new system in select markets. For the first time, flyers are self-selecting their security lane based on three color-coded security choices: green for beginners and families, blue for intermediates, and black for experts such as business travellers.
The “Black Diamond” lane has got to be a fun one to watch, like a well-oiled machine. First the advertising bins, now this. TSA rocks.

Currently, when Facebook members buy items like movie tickets or shoes (or whatever) on participating e-commerce sites, news of those purchases are sent to the members’ friends. According to Mediapost, “after three weeks of increasingly loud protests, Facebook is reportedly considering retooling its controversial Beacon program, which notifies members about their friends’ purchases.” What, you say? You didn’t know Facebook was sharing your purchases with your friends? Mediapost says, “Members have an opportunity to decline to share that information, but the opt-out system is seriously flawed, with users not seeing the opt-outs and/or not understanding that doing nothing means Facebook will share information about their purchases.” And you were worried that your REAL age showed up in your profile, silly.

Almost made it to the Idea Conference this year, but my nails weren’t quite dry.
Last year was apparently a great success, with a round of inspiration for all. This one I particularly like, Euro’s David Jones, “taking a swipe at the research and pre-testing industry.” Mr. Jones exhorted listeners to stop asking permission. Drawing on a “truth” from British comedian Vic Reeves that “96.2% of all statistics are made up,” Jones argued that some of the most well-liked ads aren’t based on research or focus-group results. Instead they but rely on a creative director’s gut instinct of what consumers will like. Boy, do we like this guy.

It hasn’t always been about YouTube, you know. Who remembers the internet phenomenon in 2001/02, “All your base are belong to us”? It was the poorly-translated line from the video game, “Zero Wing“, that reached fever pitch as a catch phrase. Why? Hmm. If we knew the answer to that, we could bottle it and make millions.

Not too long ago, Rudy was on a plane sitting next to Owen Wilson. “Tell him his nose isn’t THAT bad,” I texted. Rudy, of course, showed the text to Owen Wilson. Now, the guy is attempting suicide. Goes to show– if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Couldn’t resist passing along this funny post from one of our favorite ad blogs, Adrants.?Ǭ† Steve Hall never misses an opportunity to serve up commentary on the sauciest and raciest marketing out there. This one, for Bling H2O, is just downright funny. Read the post on Adrants here.

I avoid walking under ladders, never toast with water, and am even known to throw salt over my shoulder now and again. I braced myself, ready for the luck that was sure to come my way on this 7/7/7, the Luckiest Day of the Year.?Ǭ† I came up snake-eyes. On the other hand, it was a great day for my dog, Blue. A bird flew over us while we were on our morning walk. Blue jumped up in the air and caught the bird in one clean mouthful. Now that was PURE 7-7-7.?Ǭ†?Ǭ† For those of you who didn’t catch a bird in your mouth today: We are capable of creating our own reality– of using the things the universe puts in our path, no luck necessary.
